Road Trips 2: Mid Atlantic

 New York-

I was told that we went to Niagara Falls in the mid 80s but I only vaguely remember it.  My first clear trip here came in 1989 to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and we also stopped at Lake Placid.  We returned in 1994 and 1998 for Junior Olympic races in Buffalo but never really toured the city.  We did catch glimpses of the Falls from the road.   In 2005, the New England road trip that ended in Kennebunkport began in Albany, New York and also included Cooperstown.

It was not until 2017 that I came here on my own and it was my first visit to NYC.  I turned in a respectable performance in the race.  It turned out that I couldn't get enough.  I stopped back for just a night in 2018 and spent just a few hours in Manhattan the next year for the race in Jersey City.  My last trip came in 2021.  I came up from New Jersey and drove over the Staten Island bridge and the NYC marathon start.  I had a surf session at Rockaway Beach in Queens and spent the night in Brooklyn.  I could definitely see myself going back to NYC and would like to see Niagara Falls on my own terms.

New Jersey-

 I have in-laws who used to live in the Trenton area so I've been there several times.  I was told that we went to Wildwood in the early 80s but I don't remember it.  My first memorable trip here came in 1995 for a Junior Olympic race in 103 degrees.  I ran the Steeplechase for the first time.  It was not until 2019 that I returned here on my own terms.  The race was the Newport Liberty half in Jersey City.  I returned in 2021 for a beach hopping trip starting in Wildwood that included stops at Sandy Hook and Surf City on Long Beach Island.

Pennsylvania-

I've been to Pittsburgh many times.  Highlights include an attractive skyline, a couple of nice amusement parks in Kennywood and Sand Castle plus my favorite baseball stadium in PNC Park.  Too bad the team sucks.  I did very poorly in my half marathon here in 2015 and would like to have the opportunity to redeem myself.  I've been to a few of the smaller cities such as DuBois, Altoona and Erie.

I believe that we went to Philadelphia in 1993 as a family but I visited on my own terms in 2019 prior to the race in Delaware.  I returned twice in 2021.  First was the start of the Delmarva road trip then the start/end of the Jersey Shore road trip.  I saw the Rocky statue, the Liberty Bell, a Ben Franklin museum and finally Independence Hall.

Delaware-

I took several side trips across the border from Ocean City, Maryland to Bethany Beach for a less crowded surf session back in 1999-2000.  I did return to Wilmington in 2019 for the Caesar Rodney half.  My last visit was in 2021 on the DelMarVa road trip that included a stop in Dover for the night and a visit to the Capitol grounds.

Maryland-

My sister used to live in Salisbury and I actually spent a summer there myself back in 2000.  I landed a job at K-Mart and took many trips to Ocean City and Assateague Island.  We also visited Baltimore a couple times as a family.  Camden Yards is a great baseball stadium.  We also saw the Inner Harbor and a museum dedicated to Francis Scott Key and the Star Spangled Banner.

Ironically, Maryland would be the last state that I would visit on my own terms.  That would happen on the DelMarVa road trip in 2021 and the race in Salisbury would be state #47.  Again, I stopped in Ocean City and took a walk on the boardwalk.

Training 2/25-3/5

 2/25- BEYOND AWFUL.  1 Mile at Vestavia in 12:46 but at least my knee didn't bother me.

Distance=1.0

2/26- Terrible 2s.  2 Mile at Vestavia in 22:22 (11:11 pace).  Splits were 10:51-11:31.  Knee was a tad sore on the first few steps but I didn't notice any problems after that.  The adrenal spike is BAD.  Day 2 off caffeine.  I've craved it but so far so good.  Sleepy but no headache yet.  Usually hours 24-36 are the worst but sometimes it's 36-48.

Distance=2.0

2/27- ROUGH.  The withdrawal symptoms peaked just before 48 hours then the adrenals spiked.  Did 1 mile in 11:08 in the afternoon.  My morning session was so bad that I won't even reveal it.

Distance=2.0

2/28- Estimated distance was 1.5 miles give or take on South Lakeshore extension.  Ran it naked but I was beyond awful once again.

Distance=1.5

3/1- AM- 1 mile in 11:26 but did manage a slight negative split (5:48-5:38).

PM- MUCH WORSE THAN THE MORNING.  Pace was well over 12 minutes and I quit after a half mile.  I am now past the 100 hour mark without caffeine or alcohol.  The adrenal spike is NOT going down and I get worse after several hours without the pills.  I have no choice.  I MUST increase the Thym-Adren.  I've had some spikes after trying to quit before but NOTHING like this!

Distance=1.5

3/2- Vestavia was closed in the evening so I ran a Mile at Montreat in 10:23 on the increased dose.  Improvement over yesterday and probably my best showing since before the California trip but I did hope for better than this.  Will I finally see sustained improvement from this point?

Distance=1.0

3/3- DISASTER AGAIN.  This time, the mega dose of Thym-Adren was too much.  I caved on caffeine.  I had to because I could not function at work without it.

Distance= 1.0

3/4- Unplanned rest day.  I did find the culprit.  It's Apple Cider Vinegar and Probiotics but I did improve with extra Auto Immune support.  It's become clear that at least temporarily, the Candida die off makes Auto Immune issues WORSE!  I have 2 options.  Stay the course and take mega doses of Auto Immune supps OR reduce the dose of Probiotics and ACV.  Maybe a combination of both.

3/5- I HATE doing these test intervals but they are necessary to know where I stand.

Nothing- 2:01 (12:06 pace)

Thym- Adren - 1:54 (11:30 pace) only slightly better

2 Auto Immune pills- 1:44 (10:24 pace)

Mega Auto Immune dose-  Fared NO better.  1:45 followed by a 1:43.

I improved only AFTER a forbidden drink.  That answers yesterday's question.  I MUST cut back on the ACV and Probiotics.  Mega doses of Auto Immune support won't work.  If I am to take ACV, I should take Auto Immune pills immediately after.  Managed only a 1:28 (8:48 pace) so that's still BAAAAUUHHD!

Distance= 1.0

Road Trips Part 1 New England

 I have now thoroughly explored most of the 50 states so I thought I would update my road trip list from the sidebar.  I have met the strict standard twice in all 6 of these states.  My favorite of these states is probably New Hampshire with Rhode Island a close second.

I was told that I was in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the early 80s but I was too young to remember it and thus, it does not count under the strict standard.  I do have a very vague memory of Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts but nothing else.  I did not shore up southern New England until 2018.

Connecticut- Crossed the border from Massachusetts on I-91 and picked up the Metro North Train to NYC from New Haven.  I spent a night in New Haven and took a drive along the coast of the Long Island Sound.  This was in 2018.  I returned to Connecticut the next year, this time for a race.  I had dinner near the Mystic seaport and took in a sunset at Groton Point.  The race was at Ocean Beach  in New London and I took a dip in the water afterwards.  Unfortunately, there was no surf because waves were blocked by the Long Island Sound.  I could possibly see myself returning to see Bridgeport but it would be combined with a NYC trip.

Rhode Island- My first stop was little more than a pass through on the same 2018 trip through Connecticut but I made the strict standard with a stop in Newport and the Cliff Walk.  I returned twice in 2019 on separate trips.  The first was in the Spring to Providence strictly for a race.  I did not even rent a car or leave the downtown area.  The last was in August of 2019.  From Connecticut, I was on the hunt for better surf and found it in Narragansett.  I also explored a bit more of Newport in the evening before heading to Massachusetts for the night.

Massachusetts- Also on the aforementioned 2018 road trip, I toured Boston and Cape Cod.  Highlights included the Freedom Trail, Boylston, the JFK Library and the Prudential Tower.  My race was near Westport at Horseneck Beach.  I did return on the aforementioned August 2019 trip that included a tour of Fenway Park and this time, a swim at Horseneck Beach.  I haven't seen the Berkshires in the Western half of the state but I hear it's nice there.

Vermont- Prior to 2005, I had never been to northern New England at all and my parents had not visited since before I was born.  In 2005, we stopped in Rutland for dinner and then took a drive through the Green Mountains.  I did not return until 2018 for the race in Springfield.  My last visit was in the Fall of 2019.  After the race in New Hampshire, I crossed the border into Vermont and stopped in both Montpelier and Burlington before crossing the border into Canada.  Back in America, I got some good pizza in Derby Line before crossing back into New Hampshire.

New Hampshire- First visit was the 2005 road trip.  We toured the Capitol building in Concord and had an interesting tour guide who described the legislature as "non-partisan" with a distinctive New England accent.  I returned in the Fall of 2019 for the race in Concord that included the stops in Vermont and Canada.  My last visit came in 2021 and included stops in Hampton Beach for a swim, Mt. Washington and a very nice state park called Franconia Notch.  That's especially beautiful in the Fall.   I also did short walking tours of both Concord and Manchester.  I could envision myself possibly coming back for skiing in the winter.

Maine- My first visit also came on the 2005 road trip that ended at Kennebunkport and Portland.  I returned in 2014 for a flight to Bangor and a scenic drive through rural pine areas on my way to Atlantic Canada.  I stayed in a hotel just across the border back in America then went for a junk run on the University track before my flight back from Bangor.  I was back again briefly in 2019 with a stop in the York coast on the aforementioned trip to New Hampshire/Vermont/Canada.  In 2021, I raced in my 49th state, toured Acadia NP and actually went swimming with no wetsuit at Ogunquit and Old Orchard Beach.  Water temp was about 67 in late August.

5 days Off Training

 No running on Monday or Tuesday in Palm Springs.  I had no time for anything other than a junk run anyway.  I did keep the legs moving with a few moderate hikes.  I was still wiped out on Wednesday and with the 2 hours jet lag, I would not have expected much.   I figure I’ll just write it off as a loss and try to regroup next week.  I did do a junk 1 Mile jog today (Saturday) but I was beyond awful with a time of 12:46.  Unfortunately, I have had an autoimmune flare.  This is extremely disheartening but at least I have the pills needed to get back on track and I know what to do about it.

The trouble actually began last Saturday.  I knew that my poor performance in the 10K time trial was related to the pills.   I noticed that a single dose of Thym-Adren really made a BIG difference, which should not happen under normal circumstances.  I opened with 3 of those pills but a 4th made things significantly WORSE.  In Palm Springs, I tried to get by with just 1 but was considerably BETTER on 2.  That was the sweet spot but unless I did something to address the autoimmune issue, it may not stay the sweet spot for long.

I feared that an adrenal spike would wreck the Palm Springs trip.  Though I didn't feel great when I was out there, I was well enough to enjoy myself.  When I got home, I took an IP-6 pill, which strengthens the immune system and got an IMMEDIATE negative response, which always happened prior to addressing the auto-immune issues.  However, the Cytokine suppressant and Immune modulator improved my symptoms.  In theory, I should simply increase the dosage of the Cytokine suppressant and I should be back on track within a few days.

Why did it happen?

I believe it is related to the Candida die off.  In the recent past, whenever I tried to quit sugar, my sensitivity actually got worse.  Truly a vicious cycle!  I have read that gut health and autoimmune issues are inter-related.  I would have thought that when the Candida does die off, the sensitivity would diminish.  Not the case.  Perhaps this is only a temporary reaction.  Then again, it never fails.  I solve one problem and another one springs up.  I just cannot plug all the leaks.  This ends the run of sustained improvement.

Update:

Again, it's hard to understand why this happened.  I've been pretty disciplined about taking the Auto-immune pills.  I might miss a dose here and there but it's rare.  I had no issues taking just 1 of those pills everyday for the past 2 months.  Then, all of a sudden, it's not enough.  The Candida die-off can be the only explanation.  Also, I have to be careful about taking too much.  Suppose I take 4-5 of those pills every day?  That could cause problems as well.

After upping the Auto-Immune support, the adrenals did indeed spike.  Now is as good a time as any to try again to eliminate sugar and alcohol from my diet.  I expect another rough week ahead.  Another strategy that I am willing to try is increased Probiotics PLUS the Apple Cider Vinegar.

Any issues after the Skiing?

Thankfully, that is of no concern.  I probably would not have been able to run for the first 3 days after falling but after 5 days, it did not bother me at all.  One thing that I must remember:  If I am not healthy, my connective tissues are not working at 100 percent, which means that I will be vulnerable to injuries.  While a small spill won't hurt a healthy person, I could sprain a ligament.  This was probably my last ski session of this season.  Water temperatures at the Florida Gulf have climbed above 65 degrees.  It's beach season now.

Palm Springs Trip Report

 Why here?  Beautiful scenery.  Southern California is one of the few places in which it is possible to catch a shot of tall palm trees with snow capped mountain peaks.  I've wanted to get some of those shots for a long time.

2/18- I had to wait until Saturday afternoon to catch my flight because the prices would have been ridiculous otherwise.  After a connection in Houston, I landed on time around 9:30 local time and went straight to bed.  If possible, I recommend an earlier flight and driving maybe 45 minutes to stay near Joshua Tree NP.

2/19- I was up with the sun and embarked on a 3 mile hike on a trail called 49 Palms.  It was an out and back desert trail with some pretty steep climbs that ended with an oasis of palms trees.

From here, I traveled just a few miles to the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park.  I wish I had stayed closer the previous night because I'm sure this would have been awesome at sunrise.  As it is, it was still pretty cool.  Key's Viewpoint is a must see stop and there are several interesting rock formations not to mention the ubiquitous Joshua trees.

From Joshua Tree, it was slightly less than 2 hours to Snow Summit Ski Resort on Big Bear mountain.  Yes, that's right.  Skiing in Southern California.  Many people go skiing and surfing on the same day here.  It's referred to as the California Double.  As for the skiing, the big lesson learned is that any Western ski resort will be MUCH tougher than those back East.  You can expect a LOT longer runs and what would be classified as an Intermediate slope in North Carolina will be considered Beginner terrain here.  It proved to be a bit of a disappointment for me but it didn't wreck my trip.  I wiped out on my first run then was extra cautious from that point on.  Others also commented that the slope was much too steep for a Beginner category.   My knee was a little sore the next day but it didn't prevent me from doing more hiking.  If I had it to do again, I probably would have skipped the skiing and spent more time at Joshua Tree and Palm Springs itself.

Again, I stayed a few blocks away from the downtown area that night but did go out for a quick drink.

2/20-
A bit more of a chill day.  Again, I was up with the sun and caught some more shots of palm trees with snow capped peaks then took the Aerial Tram up to 8500 feet elevation.  Here, there was PLENTY of snow on the ground and it usually stays until April.  Crazy to go from So-Cal to a Canadian type vibe and alpine climate within just a 15 minute ride on a cable car.  Afternoon high temps reached the mid 70s but it was only 40 degrees at the top of the mountain.

From the Aerial Tramway, I headed west on I-10 toward Los Angeles then turned south on State Route 243 then picked up 74 east.  It was a scenic and windy mountain road that went back over 6,000 feet elevation and yes, there were some patches of snow on the ground.  Back at lower altitude, I picked up some fast food then went back east on I-10 and caught the southern part of Joshua Tree NP.  It was almost 5:00 by the time I got back to Palm Springs and tonight, I did stay in the heart of town and enjoyed a night out even though I was quite tired.

2/21- Got up for a sit down breakfast then went for a hike at Indian Canyon trail.  This was a FOREST of palm trees with a small creek nearby.  I also checked out another desert trail with snow capped peaks but no palms.  I caught a 1:30 flight and though it was close, I made my connection in Denver and landed back in Birmingham around 9:00 local time.   It was to be either California or Idaho this holiday weekend.  Though I could have done a couple things better, I think I made the right call.

Training 2/13-2/19

 2/13- Too much Apple Cider Vinegar last night and I knew it immediately.  It is causing a Candida die off reaction.  The same is true with the Glutamine.  It appears that 1 of those pills does not trigger significant ill-effect but more than that is a BIG problem.  Only good news is that the Thym-Adren did not have much of an impact.

Did the hated half lap intervals at Montreat.  Improved from a 2:01 to a 1:35 AFTER chugging a small Red Bull.  This is the second time that this has happened.  Over the weekend, Red Bull made me feel much WORSE!  The only reasonable explanation is that over the weekend, my Probiotic dose was too low and I could not tolerate the sugar because it feeds Candida.  NOW, I am having die-off reactions and the sugar eases the die off.  Again, there NEEDS to be a middle ground that allows me to train while killing off the Candida. Perhaps the need for Thym-Adren will diminish when that happens.

Distance=0.5

2/14- Stuck with the Apple Cider Vinegar last night and the ill-effects were not nearly as bad.  Improved to a 1:48 for a half lap on nothing then fared NO better on Thym-Adren (very good news).  Today, I did NOT turn to Red Bull for symptom relief.  I stuck it out.

Took a few minutes rest then clocked a robust 11:45 for the Mile at Montreat.  It's okay.  I expected to endure a rough week or two but it's going to be worth it in the end.  Held the pace and actually managed a slight pick up in the last lap.  Should be considerably better tomorrow.

PM- Did another half mile at Montreat non-stop and finished in 5:33 (11:06 pace).  On track for a nice improvement but nothing earth shattering.  The big question:  How would I react to more Apple Cider Vinegar and Glutamine?  Answer:  Not much of a reaction.  I did slow to 5:44 (11:28 pace) but I felt no different.  That's only a 3% difference so I say it's not enough to be considered significant.  Things are beginning to look up but I do fear an adrenal spike this weekend when I am in Palm Springs.

Distance=2.5

2/15- 2 miles on Lakeshore in 20:19 (10:09 pace).  Vision for the future is almost clear.  Limit sugar and alcohol.  Take Probiotics and Apple Cider Vinegar with Glutamine.  Splits were 10:08-10:11.  Significant improvement over yesterday but still a ways to go.  Please no adrenal spike this weekend.

Distance=2.0

2/16- 1 mile at Montreat was all that I had time to do.  Finished in 9:15 with splits of 4:42-4:33.  I'll take it.  My PR is soft but I am now within 59 seconds.  Compared to just 2 days ago, this is a MINUS 2:30.  That's a little too fast in terms of progress.

Distance=1.0

2/17- Naked 1.5 mile jog at Montreat without pills or a watch.  It was slow but I could handle it.  This served no purpose other than to pad my total.

Distance -1.5

2/18- 25 laps at Vestavia track in 71:54 (PR) (11:33 pace).  Well, at least I am on the board for the 10K distance and should get a pretty easy PR next time out.  I didn't expect to come close to the sub-60, but I did expect to do better than this.  I started with a comfortable effort in the low 10s but was well over 12 by Mile 6.  Never felt all that tired but just couldn't pick up any speed.  1st half- 33:40, 2nd half- 38:14.  OUCH!  Odds are that I am still feeling the effects of the Candida die off, but I do suspect that the pills are off.  I may need to reduce the Thym-Adren and Stress Pak

Distance=6.5

2/19- 3 mile hike in Palm Springs with some spurts of fast running when the terrain allowed for it.  Distance was 1 mile give or take a few yards.

Distance=1.0

-15 miles on the week.  YTD=84

Rant: Simps

 I am progressing ahead of schedule but even if I exceed my expectations and come back as a sub-4 marathoner, I'll still be plenty mad about what happened with my health.  I feel like I was given the APPEARANCE of healing 10 years ago.  Why not?  My workouts were INSANE and I could handle it.  For a brief period of time, I was symptom-free on no pills at all.  I also feel that I was USED to spread hope to the world under false pretenses.  The healing was nothing more than an illusion and I never had a chance with the protocol until I found the source of the inexplicable reactions to benign vitamins and minerals.  After many false hopes, I finally have a reason for optimism thanks to auto-immune supplements.

The only way that I will feel better about the timing of my recovery is if the woman of my dreams is out there and for whatever reason, she would not have interested me if we had met a decade ago.  Though the qualities that I am looking for are pretty much the same, I am more open to inter-racial dating nowadays and have taken an interest in learning Spanish.  Also, I could envision my 30-year old self to be vulnerable to getting hurt by being too much of a simp.  For those who don't know, a simp is a slang term primarily directed at men who go overboard with being nice to women with hopes of getting into a relationship when they know or should have known that there is no interest on the other side.  If they are unfortunate enough to get into such a relationship, they will be completely subservient to their girlfriend. He will allow her to walk all over him even if it becomes abusive then get dumped when she finds someone more appealing.  There is NO WAY that I will fall into that trap nowadays.

Disclaimer: No sexism is intended.  The following anecdotes do not reflect my overall experiences with women. If a man treated me the same way, I'd be just as upset.  I am only pointing out red flags that should be avoided by BOTH men and women.  Here are my top 3 red flags.

1 Too Clingy- If you send me a good morning text every day or ask how my work is going, that's fine.  I'd like it if you do that.  If you want to chat with me throughout the day when I am supposed to be working, that is a problem.  Sometimes, after finishing a small task at work, I take a 2 minute break to browse my newsfeed on Facebook.  That is NOT the time to chit chat with me on Messenger.  If you send me texts every hour and get upset when I don't answer right away, we've got a problem.  One person talked about how I "make her sad" by not answering immediately and came on way too strong too early.  I made it clear that friendship was as far as this goes but she did not stop.  I guess you could say that this is a female simp.

This usually reflects low self-esteem and I've been there myself.  Though I never went that overboard, when I was in school, I did feel a little sad when my crush didn't talk to me much.  I went home happy on the days that she was more friendly than usual even if I got a bad grade on an exam.  What happens when you find out that dating your crush is not all that you had hoped it to be?  Will you still go overboard to impress them and bend over backwards in a vain effort to make it work?  I hope not.

At the other end of the spectrum, ghosting someone for several days with no explanation after they told you that they are hurting is not cool either.  That will likely lead to neglect in a relationship.  There needs to be a healthy balance of togetherness and personal space.

2. Overly Critical/ Unrealistic Expectations-  A person who is overly critical yet thin-skinned themselves with no sense of accountability for hurtful words and actions is a toxic combo that must be avoided at all costs.  As a hypothetical example, suppose that I occasionally leave my pajamas on the floor next to the bed instead of putting them back in the dresser drawer.  Just tell me gently that it bothers you and I will apologize and say that I will not do that anymore.  I might slip up, but it will be rare from that point.  If you completely flip out over what is to me, a trivial issue, we’ve got a problem.  It’s not like dirty workout clothes and trash are constantly strewn all over the bedroom floor.  We are talking about one pair of pajamas.  Newsflash: Nobody is perfect.  Not even you!  Surely, you have some quirks that can get on people’s nerves.  Are you completely oblivious to your own flaws or do you simply expect me to tolerate anything that you do even if it crosses the line into abuse?

Now let’s suppose that after flipping out on me, I gently correct you because you did something that I found to be irritating.  If you become angry, that’s a BIG problem.  Then, after the dust settles and things calm down the next morning.  I might say something like this:  “I didn’t like the way you spoke to me last night.  Both your choice of words and tone of voice were hurtful to me, and I don’t believe it was warranted under the circumstances.”  If the other person doubles down on their angry outburst, RUN!  If the situation were reversed and I spoke the same way to you, would you be upset?  If the answer is yes, you owe me an apology.  I have ZERO tolerance for physical abuse.  If you lay a hand on me and it’s not a playful or affectionate touch, I’m OUT!  No second chance.

I do believe strongly in communication.  Although I would never deliberately hurt my girlfriend’s feelings, there may be things that I need to improve.  Just tell me gently and lovingly and don’t be upset if I do the same to you.  Don’t keep your angry bottled up or the other person could be blindsided by angry attack after you let the behavior go without saying something.

 I will cite one personal anecdote with a female boss who said that it was “offensive” when I interrupted her.  Yet just a few days later in the next meeting, she did the same thing to me twice in row.  There are few things that make me more angry than being bashed for doing the very same things that you are guilty of doing yourself.  Is it somehow okay when you do it and do you want to be exempt from the very same rules that you set for me?   NO.  I won’t play that game.  Imagine having to walk on eggshells to avoid the wrath or your spouse while having to tolerate abusive behaviors yourself.  If you are a simp, you could very well find yourself in that position.

3. Control/ Get Your Own Way

This trait is probably the most offensive to me.   I’ll start out with a hypothetical example.  You have a vacation destination that is #1 on your bucket list but I don’t particularly want to go there.  Unless it is a war zone or a country with severe human rights issues, I am willing to go along to make you happy.  Who knows?  I might like it if I give it a chance.  BUT BUT BUT:  Next time, I get to choose the destination and I expect you to go along with it even if it’s not among your top choices.  Fair is fair.  Another example could be if I want to go to a baseball game, but you are not interested.  If you agree to go to make me happy, I will certainly have no problem going to a movie or concert that I don’t have much interest in seeing.

Conflict and disagreements are inevitable.  Build consensus and meet in the middle.  If there is something that you really want to do, I’ll support you even if I don’t think it’s a great idea, but I expect the same in return.  I am willing to compromise to keep the peace but NO, I will not automatically go along with whatever you want to do, especially if it is at my expense.  If you change your mind frequently and increase your demands instead of sticking with the original agreement, that is a double whammy.

Here is a personal anecdote:

A female friend asked me if I wanted to go to a picnic and asked if I could drive her.  I said “Sure, that could be fun.”  After we agreed on the picnic, she insisted on going the opposite direction to Wal-Mart first and did not tell me the address of the picnic.  When we got to the parking lot, she insisted that I park 4 spaces closer.  She left her door open and asked me 3 times to move the car and would not walk with me until I did so.  No, she was not injured.  I should have known this was trouble when she had to get her own way over something that insignificant.

In the end, we spent more than an hour at Wal-Mart and never made it to the picnic.  She was completely oblivious to the fact that it was extremely boring for me and asked repeatedly to continue shopping.  If I ever told her firmly to stop doing something because I felt sick and needed to get home, she ignored me and did it anyway.  This was after I drove her and bought her lunch.  The same person had previously asked me for money to get her nails done after having not communicated with me for weeks.  A simp would have agreed in hopes that it would lead to a dating relationship.  If it does, he must do whatever she asks even if it’s no fun for him at all.  No thanks!

Another potential source of conflict that was avoided was the COVID vackseen.  Imagine being pressured to take the jab when your partner is aware of untreated autoimmune issues.  Yes, I do know people who were that crazy.    I’m sure the following ultimatum was given to many people:  Get the jab or I will leave you.    What if I suffered an injury after being pressured to take the jab when it’s now known that it does not stop the spread?  The grief on both sides would be unimaginable.  That also makes me feel a LITTLE better about the timing of my recovery.  I suppose that it is POSSIBLE that my over-active immune system protected me from COVID.

Conclusion:

Regardless of whether you are a man or woman, I have the following pieces of advice:

- Don't be submissive to the point in which your partner takes advantage of you.

- Don't tolerate physical or persistent verbal abuse.

-If your crush is not interested in you, accept it and move on.

STAND UP FOR YOURSELF!

Sustained Improvement

 It has now been 50 days since I showed up at Vestavia HS track to run a lap after nearly 6 weeks of inactivity.  While I didn't put much effort into that lap, my time was 2:43.7  The last time I ran that distance, I was down to 1:26.6  In terms of pace per Mile, I've improved from 10:54 to 5:46 (MINUS 5:08).  It hasn't all happened overnight.  Improvement has been strong and steady.  About a month ago, I was honestly trying my best but could only manage a 31:24 for 5K.  My next time trial was a 29:13.  What could I do right now if I ran all out with fresh legs?  Given that I've done 2 consecutive sub-9 paced 3 mile workouts, I believe that I am good for a low-mid 27.  My Mile PR of 8:16 looks awfully soft and I'll shoot for a 7:45 next time.  I FULLY expect to break 60 for 10K if my pills are on target and I like my chances of being able to do it consistently.  If I can, I'll sign up for a local race and hope that leads to more road trips and run-cations.  This is after I had pretty much given up hope after Hawaii.

My total distance in the last 50 days is just 71.5 miles, which averages out to an even 10 miles per 7 day week.  If I can get up to the 30-35 MPW range with consistency, there is room for a LOT more improvement.  While I have no illusions of matching my times from 10 years ago or even their age-graded equivalents, it's looking like I have a realistic chance of doing well enough to enjoy racing and the running community.  I'd estimate that I can hold a sub-4 marathon pace for over 4 miles at this point.  4.37 is a third of the way to a half marathon and I think I'd have a chance on my best day.  A sub-2 half is beginning to look realistic.

The only thing that can stop me is medical issues that prevent me from training at the recommended mileage.  Yes, I've had a couple of adrenal spikes and 1-2 days blips that can be explained by taking a bad pill or most recently, a shipment that did not arrive as scheduled.  I have had NO autoimmune flares or unexplained reactions to benign supplements.  That is YUGE!   I have gradually increased my weekly distance and had no problems with 15 miles the past 2 weeks.  In fact, I could have done more.  I'm shooting for 18 this week and 20 by the end of the month.  I expect to be able to handle it.

This is probably my longest stretch of sustained improvement since at least 2017.  That said, I was in an extremely deep hole and I'm only beginning to dig myself out.  I've still got a long way to go.

Training 2/6-2/12

 2/6- AM- 1 mile at Montreat on no adrenal support in a time of 10:23.  A lot better than last week's attempt but this is still BAAAAUHHD!  Figure that this is more than 2 minutes slower than my usual time.  This gap must shrink.

PM- Canterbury 3.5 mile loop.  It's been a while since I've done this route.  It's a tough one.  Finished in 34:12 (9:46 pace).  For an easy day on a hilly route, an overall pace in the high-9s is acceptable albeit below average.  I was NOT pleased that I faded so badly on the back half.  I opened with a solid 8:54 first mile but never recovered from the hills early in Mile 2.  It was downhill from there in more ways than one.  Despite the declines, my pace was over 10 in the last 2 miles.  Got much worse after I got home.  It appears that this happened because I ran out of Magnesium.  I should be okay.  The order did arrive today.

Distance=4.5

2/7- Back on track this evening.  It was indeed the lack of Magnesium.  I'm okay with that.  Although I should take it every day, nothing will happen if I miss a day or two.  I can get by for a long weekend without it but any longer than 5-7 days and I'm in trouble.  The same holds true for all my other pills except for Thym-Adren.  That is the only one that I must take every day.  I HOPE that need will diminish when my gut health improves.

Workout was 3 miles out and back on South Lakeshore in a time of 26:38 (8:53 pace).  Solid performance.  Only complaint was that I faded a bit on the back half (13:08-13:30) but part of that was due to a way too fast start.  I wisely backed off after a first quarter mile in just over 2:00.  I was working at the end but I was not flat out.

Distance=3.0

2/8- Easy 2 on Lakeshore in 17:55 (8:58 pace).  Opposite of yesterday.  Slow start but once I got in the groove, I was rolling.  Splits were 9:01-8:54 and I did NOT kick at the end.  I was working a bit and was a little winded but had plenty more in the tank.  Just 1 more workout before the 10K this weekend.  Rain is in the forecast tomorrow so we'll see

Distance=2.0

2/9- Easy 2 again this time at Veteran's Park.  Finished in 17:38 (8:49 pace).  Solid performance overall.  Surprisingly, I was faster than I was on Lakeshore despite the slow gravel trail.  Started too fast with a 2:03 opening quarter mile then wisely backed it down.  After that, I was fairly even.  I had plenty left at the end but it took a sprint in the last 100 to get the last mile under 9 minutes.  This is my 5th consecutive day running and I'm not showing any signs of a breakdown.

Distance=2.0

2/10- Planned rest day.  Weather looks iffy tomorrow but I should beat the rain if I start early enough.

2/11- FAILURE!  I fully expected to break 60 for 10K and was hoping for a 58.  I knew that I was in trouble immediately when I found it hard to hold 60 minute pace on the first lap.  The first few laps should have been a breeze given my recent workouts.  I passed 2 laps in 4:50 and it got worse from there.  Coaxed 2 miles but got slower with every step.

Distance=2.0

The culprit was Candida.  Last week, I could not handle too many Probiotics or Glutamine and actually got BETTER after drinking Red Bull.  I stuck with the low Probiotics and didn't worry about the sugar.  The pattern reversed itself today.  I need those Probiotics but am unsure about the Glutamine.  There MUST be a balance zone that allows me to kill off the Candida WITHOUT the adrenal spikes and die off reactions.

Update: One glutamine pill might be okay.  NOT more than one!  I must increase the Probiotics.  How much?  That remains to be seen

2/12- Scheduled rest day but I did train to make up the shortfall from yesterday.  3 miles in 33:54 (11:18 pace). Added a cool at basically walking pace.   Ugly as expected as I'm still clearing out the excess Glutamine.  I would have been a bit better if I had waited until the afternoon.  I never felt uncomfortable but could not pick up any speed.  Splits were pretty even.

Distance= 3.5

Weekly summary:

I have mixed feelings.  This was shaping up to be a winner until the weekend disaster.  I can run a 5K in the 27s on a good day but am over 35 on bad day.  That is NOT acceptable.  A 1-2 day blip once a month?  I can live with that but NOT every week or even every other week!  The plan for the Candida is at least 3 Probiotics, limited sugar plus Apple Cider Vinegar and possibly 1 Glutamine.  I thought about running the 5K at Mercedes this weekend.  Good call on the no-go decision.  On the plus side, I did hit a new weekly high in mileage for the year.  I'll shoot for 20 next week.
